Consumption (from latin: consumere which means to spend or destroy) it’s the action and effect of consuming and spending.
These days, more than ever, going through a global crisis, we can observe that the economic models that promised us wellbeing and peace of mind continue to fail. Maybe one of the fundamental aspects of these models is indeed the consumption, which is now part of every aspect of our daily lives, appearing and mutating into everything we do. It has been in a way a catalyst that determinates our level of happiness.
This group exhibition shows different artistic proposals that criticize the different types of consumption, from the one relating to the product consumption in the supermarkets to more sophisticated as cultural consumption.
A wide array of products in the supermarkets, massive productions to reach the million, presidential propaganda or simply photographs from tourists who document different or local cultures, are all examples of how artists perceive the consumption in the world we are now living.
The big question is: How does consumption determinate our identity, our values or the way we behave in our social circles? How much do you construct or destroy? Like Erich Fromm would say in his book: To Have or to be? : “Tell me what you have and I will tell you who you are”.
